Eisenhower stopped allied armies from advancing on Berlin because it was in the area designated for Soviet occupation. He had no intention of losing American or British lives to benefit the Red Army. Allied Armies in Northern Germany stopped at the Elbe River and held their positions. Southern Armies were diverted further south to take Austria while the generals of the 21st army group looked longingly over Elbe while their troops began occupation duty. German Army group B had been largely destroyed in the 7 day battle that took the Ruhr pocket. Little more than distance (60 miles) stood between them and Berlin on April 1st 1945. It took the Russian armies 3 more weeks to reach Berlin.
