About 5 yrs ago, James was diagnosed with type II. He lost about 30 lbs and we made diet changes. Here's what we learned.
Stop eating all "white" foods - white bread, white potatoes, etc. because they are high in carbs which the body breaks down to sugar. There are lots of good whole wheat products now - breads, pastas, etc. They taste different, but are good. You can even get whole wheat buns at the fast food places.
Switch to sweet potatoes. They stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin. More and more restaurants are placing them on menus.
There is a new sweetener on the market called Truvia. It can be found at most WalMart stores. It is made from the stevia plant. Its natural product, not a chemical. Because of its make up, the body does not absorb/digest it at all. It just passes through.
There is a website www.truvia.com. You can buy it online and they also have recipes and a conversion table to use this product instead of sugar. We haven't tried Truvia so I don't know about the taste.
You probably already know this, but diabetes can negatively affect blood circulation. Diabetics frequently have problems with their lower legs and feet. My father-in-law had special shoes because of his diabetes. It also seems to adversely affect eyesight.
I'm sure his doctor will give him the whole 9 yards of what he needs to do to get healthy again and stay that way. Just make sure he follows his dr's recommendations.
