Mebbe so, as the position of an updraft WOULD naturally be lower than a downdraft. Still, a downdraft will work fine with a gravity feed fuel system, as long as the bottom of the tank is higher than the fuel inlet on the carb. JD two cylinders come to mind. Don't recall if the carbs on them are downdraft or sidedraft. Perhaps the overall height of the tractor is the consideration that determined the preference for updraft carbs. I'll have to hit the picture books, and see if there's a correlation.
