Don't forget that with a simple, single plane manifold, it's hard to run a vertical exhaust with a downdraft carb, especially with the underhood heat of a tractor. The 2-cyl JD's are proof that sidedraft or downdraft carbs can cause catastrophe when they flood. The 50/60/70 and later JD's had an oil pressure activated fuel shutoff to prevent these problems.
