engine problems

Hello, I get a lot of good advice from this group; excuse me for asking for some help on a non-tractor engine problem. I have a 1988 Honda Accord, with lots of miles (240,000+) which has always run well. Recently, I note the following: 1. gas mileage is poor. 2. bad smell from the exhaust. 3. soot/carbon deposits on spark plugs and also on the back of the car near the exhaust pipe. 4. noise from a portion of the emission control system which turns out to be the "secondary air supply system." Regarding #4, my Honda book says that the function of the secondary air supply system is "to improve emmision control performance by intoducing fresh air from the air cleaner into the exhaust manifold." The system consists of a pipe running from the air cleaner to exhaust manifold, with a vacuum actuated closeoff valve in between. I disconnected the pipe at the valve thinking perhaps something was wrong with the valve. I then notice that with the engine running, exhaust comes out the pipe (from the manifold, towards the carberautor) with enough force, that I can't believe that fresh air could ever move from the air cleaner toward the exhaust under any operating conditions. Anyone have any insights as to what is going on here? Two other things worth mentioning: First, PCV valve appears to be okay, and engine acts the same whether or not pcv valve is installed. Second, there are some rubber hoses connecting the pipes of this secondary air supply system. When I first disconnect the pipes at the rubber hose near the air cleaner, I noticed some antifreeze residue around the edge of the inside of the hose. I wiped it clean. Now, a month later, when I inspected it again, there is more antifreeze residue. (I have had a small cooling system leak for a long time, so I do add coolant occasionally) Any help would be appreciated!
