I bought a 2000 chevy lumina with 4000 miles in 2000.IT always had a pecking sound,especially when cold.I complained to the dealer who told me it was a factory defect that wouldn't hurt anything.One of the pistons was undersized and would make noise till it got heated up and expanded.I later got a letter from GM saying they would fix it,but only replace one piston,no rings or bearings.I decided to let it be as the noise mostly goes away when it warms up.That explains why the dealer always had the car running when i first looked at it.I thought they were just being polite,but they were just warming it up so i couldn't hear the peck.
