OT: repairs when the warranty is up @ 36.000 miles ?

Anyone ever experienced trying to get GM to satnd behind lifter R&R after the warranty is expired. My warranty ('03 GMC v-6)was 36.000 miles on power train but a stuuborn lifter has persisited in clattering on and off for the last 20,000 miles (have 76K on it now).

Is it worth letting a rep from GM know of my problem ? Reason being, the heads have to be removed in order to R&R the lifters ... reallllllly expensive $$$$ to have it repaired other wise. Crazy engineering.

What was the time frame? Warranty is 3 years or 36,000 which ever comes first. Some dealers can do goodwill but most will want to do parts and you pay labor.

I purchased the truck in '04 so I have owned it for four
years this month...

I'm afraid that even with lifters @ $100 I'm in for a
shellacking with the cost of labor and all.

A former co-worker of mine (he was a *ickhead) had a 1995 Ford Taurus that needed a transmission overhaul and it was a month past the warranty expiring. (I think it was the torque converter)

He *itched and moaned and the dealer cut the price by 1/2 or something. I am sure that there is wiggle room with the dealers as car sales are so poor now and the dealers need work in the shop.

Interesting. I'd talk to the dealer. I think in 06 they went to a 100K, bumper to bumper warranty.

Let me see if I have all the facts straight;
1- You bought a used truck.
2- It is 40,000 miles passed warranty.
3- It has had a problem for 20,000 miles.
4- Not really up on those engines but have seen few that need the heads removed to change lifters.
5- If I were a dealer or factory rep I would send you to the nearest LA-LA factory.

This may sound rude and I really do not mean it to be but lets look at the facts.........

The truck came with 3 year 36,000 mile warranty.
A extended warranty was most likely offered but you chose not to buy it.

The truck ran well threw the warranty period. In fact no problems till about 56,000 miles when the lifter started tapping and the truck now has 76,000 miles.

Now you want GM to fix the truck under warranty.

So I got to ask....... At what point do you feel the cost of repairs should be your reasonability??

If you were a month or two and maybe even 2 or 3 thousand miles over the warranty; I would say go for it but 40,000 miles past the warranty and you still looking for it to be fixed for free.

Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can relate to your problem; I've had 2 Trailblazers, purchased with less than 20K on them certified from the dealer. At 50K rear axle bearings went out of the first one, complained to GM, said they didn't know how the first owner drove it, so they couldn't help out. The second one just had to have the throttle body replaced at 43K. Told the dealer I am not happy with GM and will keep this in mind next time I trade.

The 4.3L V6 does not require the heads to be pulled to replace the lifters. The LS small blocks do. The 4.3 is the same basic design as the original small block from the 50's.
GM went to 5 year 100K on powertrain only in either 06 or 07. Can't remember right off. Bumper to bumper is still 3/36. There is a service bulletin on lifter noise on the LS engines. The 4.3 is not included.
Goodwill warranty coverage is at the dealer's discretion and is only allowed for up to 60k or 1 year over bumper to bumper. Some of the other factors that are taken into account are service records. If you can document regular maintenence, that always helps your case. Being a regular customer helps too. On the other hand, if you're one of those that changes oil about every 10K, you can pretty much forget about any assistance. Your vehicle is just too old and too many miles to qualify for goodwill coverage.

The lifter noise maybe the valves are sticking. I have seen a few of the 4.3 with misfire when under load and the problem was because of a buildup on the valve stem. This cause the valves to return slow.

I bought a 2000 chevy lumina with 4000 miles in 2000.IT always had a pecking sound, especially when cold.I complained to the dealer who told me it was a factory defect that wouldn't hurt anything. One of the pistons was undersized and would make noise till it got heated up and expanded.I later got a letter from GM saying they would fix it,but only replace one piston,no rings or bearings.I decided to let it be as the noise mostly goes away when it warms up.That explains why the dealer always had the car running when i first looked at it.I thought they were just being polite, but they were just warming it up so i couldn't hear the peck.

Brian: thanks for your comments. tell me how and where do you obtain your information that the heads do not have to be removed in order to R&R the lifters. Would you be kind enough to reference that statement ?

'03 4.3 V-6 and what is an LS engine ?

Thanks again for your input... JIM

John:

I have always respected your comments on the forum, but you have gone overboard. I have asked what experiences people have had in dealing with dealers. And the exact same 4.3 engine is supposed to be bullet proof for at least 100K as it is warrantied now. Always remember there is always two sides to a story; and I have owned many new and used vehicles in my day and each have been a pleasure to own and operate; and I might add, take care of responsibly $$$

Understanding that mechanical things do break down and have defects I really don't feel comfortable chasing good money after bad.. I rather trade up again or replace the entire engine in order to get some mileage out of a GOOD GM product.
So, as you have requested I'll "give you a break." And say thankyou for your comments; nonetheless, they are appreciated... JIM

If your mechanic says that you need a cam also if it has been run that many miles with a collapsed lifter.

you might have had a chance if you were the original owner. Put yourself in GM's seat and ask yourself, "What has this customer done for me?" Not much. I think you would find it hard for any manufacturer to provide out of warranty assistance to a person that they didn't sell the machine to.

This is 2009. You said you bought it in 04. That's 5 years, and it's well past any kind of warranty coverage.

I'd say you're on your own. Dealer and GM don't have to pay squat.
