They start just like a gas job, or perhaps better. My mother has an 04 which was the first year for the common rail engine. The start fine. They drive really nice. They're nice cars.... but since they moved production to mexico, they're not the quality car they used to be. Stupid electrical problems with this one, a wheel bearing and a couple other things that escape me right now.
It doesn't really pay you to own a jetta anymore. Any cheap compact like the Ford Focus or somethign similar will be miles cheaper to buy and cheaper to own. Not as nice a car, but cheaper. There was a time that you could buy the diesel Jetta for about the same money as a Tempo or escort and get near twice the mileage from it, run it 2-3 times as long and spend less in repairs. Those days seem to be gone...
