I live about 40 miles south of Louisville. Power is off to over 200,000 customers in just one county there. South and west of Louisville bore the brunt of the ice storm. Trees snapping like toothpicks under the weight of all the ice. That took down power lines and phone lines. Then it got colder. Conditions inhibit repair crews. Some areas are estimated to take a week to 10 days MINIMUM before power is restored. Rural areas somewhat longer. Normally they"ll call in crews from surrounding states to assist. Unfortunately, those areas got hit also. No back-up crews. Mysteriously, gasoline prices went up $.25 to $.30 overnight. Hmmmm Any excuse. We got this in 2 waves.
In the north central part of the state, we got snow, followed by freezing rain, then more snow. The weight of the last snowfall compounded the tree problems. Many key roads are still blocked with downed trees. It is a MESS. Kentucky doesn"t normally get a lot of significant snow events, so little money is budgeted for snow removal equipment.
We got nailed with 90+mph winds back in Sept when Hurricane Ike blew through. We had massive damage and power outages then too. These two events have been #1 and #2 worst power outages in state history, all with-in just over 4 month period. You can name your price for a generator right now.
