Have you overfilled the radiator? Since these older machines do not have an external overflow tank, they were designed to have expansion space above the radiator core. So that means you fill them about 1/4" above the core and the rest of the tank valume is for expansion. What maybe happening in your case is that the radiator is overfilled and the when the coolant expands due to a slight change in tempertureit it has no room to expand so the pressure increases and the cap relieves that pressure by spilling fluid. The only other way of increasing the cooling system pressures is by having a leaking head gasket. You don't have any of the common signs of that but a compression check can give an indication. If I were you I would try reducing the coolant fill and see if that corrects the problem.
