You'll be happier with the diesel or 460 if you're going to do much pulling. I've had a F250 with teh 351W, 4-speed and 3.73's for 10 years. It's done allright, but put a big load behind it, and it runs out of power on hills, and eats as much or more gas than the 460. 13 m.p.g. was a good day, and it was as low as 6-7mpg hauling a 7000# tractor on a tandem trailer. For anything that will fit in the bed, the 351 does just fine. Just recently bought a '01 F350 with the V10... love it so far. F250 will be for sale as soon as I get a new crank position sensor in it.
