My gas 4020 has a cube relay wired between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid. It takes the load off the ignition switch. But something caused my starter to keep running and with the gear engaged the running engine spun the starter fast enough to through the windings out of the slots. I had it rebuilt, took a new armature. I also demanded bearings, a new solenoid, and Bendix. I replaced that added relay and opened up the old one. I never did find what stuck, but I replace all but the start button and its not given any problem since.
I think the added relay was a factory service bulletin modification.
