Some diesel engines can run backwards if cranking slowly and started on ether. The owners manual for my Super 55 warns not to try to start the engine when cranking slowly because it could start backwards. The manual also says not to lug the engine almost to stalling and then release the clutch as the same thing could result. A gas engine will not run backwards for long due to no fuel source.
