diesel motor ????

Hey folks,
Had a guy say today that if you crank an engine backwards (trans in forward gear and roll backwards to start), it'll start, run and ruin in short order. Is this even possible that it would run???? I've seen old electric motors that you had to give a helper spin to that would run either direction, but an IC engine????? The guy that said it is the local expert and you never know if he's BSing or not.

Two cylinder diesel Deere's, some two stroke detroits, Listers, Petters etc.
Generally they have a Bosch, CAV, Lucas plunger style injection pump(s)operated by camshaft lobes.
Anything with an oil pump will grind to a halt in short order.
The exhaust will now blast out the intake system. One day in front of the entire crowd while tractor pulling. I was in too high a gear and lugged the 720D too low before pulling the clutch. She got her revenge by kicking over backwards. And covered myself with dirty aircleaner oil.

Some diesel engines can run backwards if cranking slowly and started on ether. The owners manual for my Super 55 warns not to try to start the engine when cranking slowly because it could start backwards. The manual also says not to lug the engine almost to stalling and then release the clutch as the same thing could result. A gas engine will not run backwards for long due to no fuel source.

This is very true! I've seen it a lot especially on the Detroit Deisel 2 cycle V8 engines. Exhaust Smoke will come out the air cleaner. You can't let it do this for very long because the oil pump like every other component is running the opposite direction with no oil pressure.

i have seen J.D.720 run backwards and the 671 jimmys.its easier for 2cycle to run backwards than the 4 cycle. it will blow the oil out of air cleaner. also oil pump would be turning backwards so yes it will destroy itself if you dont get her stopped in a hurry.

I have had it happen on military surplus 6X6's, with both White Multi Fuels, and also a Mack 6 cyl diesel.

There was at least on early tractorthat was designed for the engine to run in either direction, had something to do with the transmission gearing running in one direction gave you fast forward and slow reverse and vice versa. (i think). bill m.

CAT 3208 will run backwards, used to do that when stalling and rolling backwards in gear if I recall, been since '91, it was in a Ford L8000 tandem dump w/ford spec'd 13 speed. You knew as soon as it happened and shut it down, now if it had an oil bath breather, I'd like to think there would be nice mess to clean up after

Thats actually how Ski-Doo and Polaris installed reverse in their snowmobiles. While the sled is idling you hit a button and the sled misfires for an instant and the motor starts running backwards. This is a two stroke and it works great.

That tractor was a Hart Parr little devil and it was 2 stoke. In the same token the second year I taught Ag mechanics one of the kids brought his 400 Case from home to repair some oil leaks. When he was starting it for the first time he pulled the decompression lever and it ran backwards and put oil from the air intake all over the hood. Of course then all the kids wanted him to do it again and then it would not which was just fine with me. 30 years ago.

Didn't exactly RUN backwards but....

Dairyman had a IH 1086 with TA elininator installed. Was pulling loaded mix wagon up a steep hill and stalled the engine. Of course lost brakes and steering. Started rolling back down hill turning the engine backwards of course. Compression heat blew back into the air filter and set it on fire. Tore up the turbo too.

I've had out Case 830 gas and our Oliver 1800 gas do it. Not good on the air filter but they did run for a few seconds.

I heard a Cat D6 8 or 9U motor will run just as good backward as forward. You just don't want to be in the operators seat as it is running backwards as it has a BIG oil bath air cleaner that sits right in front of you and it will empty it in short order. Never seen it done but a guy pulling one off somewhere around here had the direction stick in R instead of F and he found this out the hard way.

My first diesel experience when I was 16, this was with a mid-fifties Oliver 66. I always thought and still think it was 4 cycle. Being quite experimental, with my bosses tractor, I learned, after over-loading it going up hill with a silage wagon and rolling backward, that it would run CCW. It smoked a lot. I stopped it in a few seconds. There were a couple subsequent times that I demonstrated the six reverse gears and two forward. It ran but did not have much power. The oil pump problem I could understand and never ran it long in the wrong direction. I would be interested in knowing the configuration of the injector pump which allowed the running backward. My thoughts are, that injection timing must have been the reason for low power

A little side-bar on the Oliver 66 is that I rolled it over 360 and landed it up right on its' wheels and without roll protection. The radiator needed some repair but the steering column and lights, which were on top of the fenders, were not even scratched. I was not injured

US Coast guard training (sail) ship Eagle was a prize of war (WWII-The BIG One). The original Mann diesel engine was designed to run in both directions. This eliminated the need for a gearbox with reverse gear. It wasn't as easy as it sounds though. The engine had to be shut down and then the camshaft had to be flipped end for end and then restarted. Picture this when approaching a dock a little on the fast side. Eagle has since been refitted with twin diesels nicknamed "drip" and "drool" with reverse gear.

Seen that happen a few times, most were the old 2 cylinder john deere's in tractor pulls, just when it almost stopped they pulled the clutch and what do you know she ran backward and smoke came out of the air intake

Dirty air cleaner oil in your tractor? I thought you of all people would be up on your maintenance. I guess nothing does run like a deere. No wonder the Deer is running backwards in their logo. LoL Dave

When I was a kid, I had a home-made wooden go cart with a B&S engine, rope start. The carb had one butterfly, and I used it to slow the RPM's, but I think it was actually a choke, and the engine was meant to run at a governed constant speed. It ran just as good backwards as it did forward. I've thought about that engine running backward so well, and have decided that I'm not smart enough to figure out why it ran good either direction.

I stalled an Allis Chalmers HD10 with Detroit 2 stroke pushing logs up into a pile almost 50 years ago. The front of the dozer was well up in the pile.

The engine restarted running backwards, dumping the oil out of the air cleaners and speeding up uncontrolably. I stuffed a hat over the exhaust pipe to starve it of air and that stopped the engine.

#1 How long does oil stay clean in an oil bath aircleaner?
#2 Any chance that oil and exhaust washed a couple of decades of dirt/dust from the aircleaner inlet, pipe work and to the pre-cleaner bowl?

Hello dave2.
I've seen it happen on a 2 stroke/cycle
Detroit diesel without a turbo.
The driver smacked the dock hard and the engine starter to turn the other way. He told me when he put it in first gear the truck backed up.
That is when he pulled the emergency shut down.
When that happens the intake filters would light up real well, as the intake becomes the exhaust, if you don't catch it and shut it down real quick! IT CAN HAPPEN.
Guido.
