My experience was different. Worked for a stripping contractor (Isbell) at Santa Rita (open pit). Used to be called "Indian Hill", 'cuz anything from not being fast enough under the shovel to complaining about a sagging dump edge got you hacked off the payroll. Plenty other guys waiting for an opening. Voted Teamsters in (corrupt even then!) but pay raise several times dues, Eucs, Cats, all eqpmt kept in better shape, and shifters even became almost human (emphasis on almost; management, including shifters, got paid by tonnage moved).
