Forget the air fare. You could get a lot better idea by driving an old tractor around the USA and talking to people every time you stop. They WILL talk to you. As a side note, my experience is that on the busiest of roads you don't get waved to very much. On the slightly less busy roads you get waved to by a probably one third of the traffic that gets by without interruption of their speed and by just about everybody who needs to slow down because of you. And to correct what you are thinking, I mean a good old fashioned friendly "how's it going" wave.
