How many tractor collectors are out there?

I received an Email from a publishing organization asking me how many antique tractor collectors are roaming around in the US. I don't have a hint of a clue. Does anyone on this website have a any kind of an idea on a number? Maybe instead of using numbers I should use a percentage of the population? What do you think? Jim

I have 64 tractors most of them run idont sell tractors i just buy them at sales , neighbours, or where ever, am i a tractor collector, or just having a fun hobby:~)

I'm almost 16 and I collect tractors, so far I only have 4, but I'll get more as I am "collecting" them. I think Dad has 8 tractors, and my brother has 1.

I think it would be about impossible to figgure out how many collectors there are out there without some sort of big goverment type study. I would say a very high percentage of rural people are into tractors.

If two is a collection, about 1.5% of the population is a collector. Population move decimal point two places to left, call it good. Cheap research on the fly. Happy New Year. JimN

You're right, Bob. Maybe I should say 'Tractor collecting as a hobby'.

This started me thinking, which is dangerous. Maybe I should get a 5 million dollar grant from the GVT so I can travel the country "gathering facts" while I enjoy lavish hotels and first class air fare. Whadda ya think? Jim

Yea,I don't know if I'm a collector or if they just keep acumulating when I'm done using them.

Sounds good. Might as well assemble a team of good looking female tractor experts to "escort" you!

Forget the air fare. You could get a lot better idea by driving an old tractor around the USA and talking to people every time you stop. They WILL talk to you.
As a side note, my experience is that on the busiest of roads you don't get waved to very much. On the slightly less busy roads you get waved to by a probably one third of the traffic that gets by without interruption of their speed and by just about everybody who needs to slow down because of you. And to correct what you are thinking, I mean a good old fashioned friendly "how's it going" wave.

I recieved that email also. Gave it some thought and didnt have a clue. I figure there trying to figure out if it worth there effort,

I don't know how many there are in the US, but we found 650 of them in Michigan willing to spend the time to drive over the Mackinaw bridge last September.

O.K., time is up. We're about at the end of the page.Jim's 1.5% of 300,000,000 is 4,500,000. Is this a bit much? At least we're coming up with some sort of basis to go by.

I'm thinking a collector can be a person who still uses the old stuff. I probably spend more time on old tractors than I do new ones, but it's because I have enough piddle jobs to keep them busy.Jim

My wife refers to my collection as "rust buckets". I classify my efforts of collecting tractors as a "tractor rescue service". I can't stand seeing these "old workhorses" going to the scrap yard. I am restoring some of them as time permits.
