Not told enough here to really analyze this, but it sounds like you made a hasty, poorly thought out decision, and failed to handle it properly with your beloved union. You made someone high up in the union mad and he/she nailed you. Could have been that you went straight to beg back with management instead of going through the union, and letting them play big shot.
