It isn't just the union "big shots". It's all the other guys lower on the senority list, and very probably the guy who replaced you as union steward. And maybe the company told you one thing and the union something else. You may never get a straight answer. If your coworkers liked you, you would have got back. The union is made up of your coworkers, who may or may not be your friends. If the membership wanted you back, you would be back, period. Sorry. I always adhered to the first rule of wing walking when changing jobs: Never let go of what ya have until you have got ahold of something else!!
