You can tell a great deal about a society by its laws and organizations; with unions, if workers had generally been well treated, they wouldn't've felt the need to shed their blood to organize...but once organized, they attracted people who wanted power, authority, money... No unions leave the worker defenseless against corporations whose legal fees etc are business expenses; unions that control a segment of business can become just as predatory.
