Ignition timing when an engine is running is a heck of a lot more important than static timing. Gas or diesel, a timing light is the cheapest method I know of, to do it. A little more pricey with a diesel since you need a Piezo pickup to hook to the light.
$20 or less ought to get you a non-power, non-inductive, non-advanving light somewhere. Kind of hard to use and see - but that's what cheap gets you.
