You can use a light or multimeter to tell you when the point are just opening then time this to the mark on the crank.

Sorry disconnect the wire to the coil hook the meter to the coil side of the distributor then set the engine at the prescribed timing mark then turn th dist. until the connection is broken. Lock it down and go for it.

Here'sthe timing method I use. Get the #1 piston on the compression stroke and then rotate the engine by hand til you have the timing mark at the correct position. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt. Then take the #1 plug wire and put a paper clip or a bent wire in the spark plug boot and hold it near a good ground. Turn on the ignition key. The rotor should be pointing near the #1 plug wire terminal on the distributor cap. Now slowly rotate the distributor back and forth in small increments til you hear the #1 spark plug wire snap. At that point you are statically timed. You may have to do it a few times to get it just right and when you feel you have it, tighten down the hold down bolt.
You really need a timing light to to check the advance mechanism and it's always good to recheck the static timing with the engine idling. You can often find a good timing light cheap on ebay. And yes you don't use them often, but when you need one you need it!
Good luck.

Ignition timing when an engine is running is a heck of a lot more important than static timing. Gas or diesel, a timing light is the cheapest method I know of, to do it. A little more pricey with a diesel since you need a Piezo pickup to hook to the light.

$20 or less ought to get you a non-power, non-inductive, non-advanving light somewhere. Kind of hard to use and see - but that's what cheap gets you.

For $23 and free shipping, you can buy a new, inductive, power light from many places, including Ebay. E.g.

I use a dialback timing light. Just set the dial to the degrees advance and the light will flash on the tdc mark. Very easy. light cost 40 dollars at a swap meet. Bernie Steffen

Johndeereman,
I have a timeing light I bought a few years ago at a yard sale. I used it once to time my 3010. I later sold the tractor. I have a diesel now and have no need for it. You are welcome to it if you want. You can e-mail me at [email protected]
