Helping Sam weld something last winter at his place in Berwick...he asked for a hand, and rather than grabbing the spare helmet, I just figured I'd look away and use my hand to block the arc. I ended up using both hands, so I figured I'd just look away. Needed to help line up the piece we were welding, so I ended up having to look nearly right at the arc when he struck it. Didn't look at it long, though.
Rest of the day I was fine. Drive home, my eyes felt a bit sore..thought it was the fact it had been a long day. Sitting in front of the PC at home, I was starting to feel it, and figured I'd go to bed. About 4AM, I woke up with some of the worst pain I've ever been in...Bed enough that gouging my eyes out almost sounded like suitable pain relief. A damp facecloth and much profanity later, I managed to doze off.
That one event was enough to change my habbits around welding. I'll still work around Sam without a mask, but I'm a lot more careful about how I do it. If I never have to feel that pain again, it'll be too darn soon..
