Stupid ain't got nuttin' on me........

Had to weld something on my tractor Saturday. In a tight spot and needed 3 hands to do it. No room for a helmet so figured I could squint through the job. Worked like a charm! Finished up what I had to do and hit the couch a couple hours later. Dosed off and woke up a couple hours later and LOOK OUT!!!!

Never knew what pain was until then. Couldn't open my eyes and couldn't see when I did. After a bout of "I TOLD YOU SO's", my wife put some antibiotic cream in and we (she) cut potatoes and tied them over my eyes. Was able to feed the animals Sunday morning but everything was a blurr. More potatoes and some kind of wonder salve smeared around my eyes and things were better in the evening. At work now and everyone thinks I tied on a good weekend. I've done some halfwitted stuff, but really outdone myself this time. Tough lesson, but a good one.

Been there, done that.

Helping Sam weld something last winter at his place in Berwick...he asked for a hand, and rather than grabbing the spare helmet, I just figured I'd look away and use my hand to block the arc. I ended up using both hands, so I figured I'd just look away. Needed to help line up the piece we were welding, so I ended up having to look nearly right at the arc when he struck it. Didn't look at it long, though.

Rest of the day I was fine. Drive home, my eyes felt a bit sore..thought it was the fact it had been a long day. Sitting in front of the PC at home, I was starting to feel it, and figured I'd go to bed. About 4AM, I woke up with some of the worst pain I've ever been in...Bed enough that gouging my eyes out almost sounded like suitable pain relief. A damp facecloth and much profanity later, I managed to doze off.

That one event was enough to change my habbits around welding. I'll still work around Sam without a mask, but I'm a lot more careful about how I do it. If I never have to feel that pain again, it'll be too darn soon..

Done that one time and If I want to remember how bad it hurt I'll just lay down and have someone pour a bag of play sand in me eyes with them open.

rest assure you only do it once!

the next time try wearing a plain ol pair of safety glasses .we sometimes in the winter repair mode weld liners inside asphalt dryer drums where there might be 2 or 3 welders going at once sure helps alot. RICK

Dave, I'm very sorry to hear this happened. I'd never suggest welding without a helmet, but helmet or not always wear safety glasses. Polycarbonate lenses will block the majority of the UV rays that cause most of the damage. That way, even if you get flashed with your helmet up you won't be burned.

I've done the same thing, and at the time, I figured that "all I need are a few quick tacks"

Well, I paid for it the same way
Heard the same from the wife (with a few STUPIDS thrown in)

Who says you're never too old too learn!!

It really hits you at night!!! When you sleep, your eyes are rebuilding themselves, and dlets say you wake up for some reason in the middle of the night,,,,, you open your eyes and it feels like burning sand in your eye lids. Sunburnt!! Hot water wash cloths, lay em right over your eye lids. Hope this helps.

Just as foolish, as plasma cutting becomes common place I see more and more people cutting away without ANY eye protection let alone UV protection. I made it a rule on my shift at work that if I find someone plasma cutting without a helmet, tinted face shield or darkened safety glasses for plasma, I'll have them talk to the big guy about their upcoming 3 day un-paid vacation. Plasma cutting WILL hurt you as bad as welding. And it's more stupid as the company provides all the safety gear.

I've been there too, Dave. It feels like someone threw battery acid in your eyes and then dropped in sand for good measure. I got mine from when another fellow was borrowing my welder and I was looking the other way and the rays were reflecting off of snow. About 8 hours later, whamo. About all you can do is wear it out. Mike

Been in the same situation. Kept my eyes shut long enough to do a couple tack welds, then it holds itself.

The rays a weldin' machine puts out penetrates skin with no problem....First night in weldin' schools, watch the FNGs weldin'in a tee shirt (Waist Up ) next day a blistered chest and belly. Rays go thru eyelids quicker than sauce thru a goose. One day of weldin' in a vessle an That was the last one for Me.....I've seen hands get their eyes burned from the rays bouncein' off iron and gettin behind their hoods when weldin' in tanks....Quotein' WYANT..."HURTS DON'T IT"

Eye specvialist told me that the human eye will regenerate in about 24 hours from damage as you described, scratched cornea, grit or any kind of cut to the surface. Yes its very painfull, glad you are OK

plasma cutter got me worse than any welder has. Just this last summer I worked a job where we were gutting a Chilis restaurant closed down. I used the plasma cutter to cut out all the stainless in the cooking line. It was hotter than heck that day so the goggles came off after about 20 minutes. I bet I cut on that thing for about 5 hours. Then loaded a 26 foot Rental truck with used restaurant equip and headed out for Sandusky Ohio, for another restaurant that was buying the used equip. I had convinced myself my eyes were bugging me just because I was tired. Well by the time I drove from Grand Rapids to Howell, i was crying so bad i had to stop for an hour. After the hour break I cried my way to Dundee and grabbed a hotel for the night. Oh my goodness, I was in so much pain the next day, but I some how managed to make it to Sandusky by 8 the next morning and back to GR before I coulkd finally give my eyes a rest.

One place where i worked, the interior of the shop was behind a large, roll-up canvas, with a door frame and swinging door. I was welding a trailer frame, behind the canvas, with the arc welder, and the other guy was busy elsewhere. After five minutes, i stopped, pushed up the hood---and there stood a young mother, holding her little girls hand, and both watching me!
Well, i never heard from the mother, but i'll bet they both had sore eyes for a couple days!
