To go back further in NW IA (I'm79) when I was growing up, storms did not bother much as far as power was concerned. We had no electricity to the farm (only a few farms did). Kerosene or gasoline lamps,windmill to pump water for livestock and hand pump for us. Therefore, power outages did not bother. We were on a farmer owned party telephone line, so if the lines went down, the neighbors got together and had it patched quickly. Sometimes, it was on fence posts until spring. On a party line, you knew that someone would be listening to your conversation! Having said all of that, I will quote what my Quaker great grandmother said a hundred years ago "They tell thee about the 'good old days' but I tell thee that they were not good. While there were many good things about life in my childhood, I would not want to return to the way things were then.
