I generally try unknown chains on a spare tire if one is available. The tire doesn't even have to be mounted on a rim. It is much easier than crawling under a vehicle to mess with them. Depending on the width of the tire, your 16.5 chains may be a close fit on the 16. I am running a set of chains right now that seem to fit both the 235/85/R16 on my Ford, or the 9.50/R16 on my Dodge.
If the chains are too long, a quick chop with the bolt cutters or hacksaw fixes the problem. Be sure to leave enough extra to make it easy to hook them up in "less than ideal" conditions. Like when you are already in the ditch in a foot of snow.
