There is a huge difference between "canceling" a credit card and "freezing" your credit. When you freeze your credit, it makes it impossible for someone to fill out a credit application with your info and get it approved. ALL credit card companies pull a credit report when they decide weather or not to issue credit cards. When they pull your credit report and it is frozen, they will contact you to see if you actually did apply for any form of credit. If you reply no, the application is denied. It's been a while, but it used to be many dept stores like Sears, Penny's etc would ask you at the checkout if you would like to fill out a credit card app and charge your purchase and offer a free gift for doing so. It only took like 10 minutes to get an approval or denial. Freezing your credit has nothing to do with any current credit cards you may already have, it just stops someone from getting new credit cards in your name. Consumer advocate Clark Howard has a web site that can walk you through freezing your credit.
