The 1240 was Deere"s first attempt at a plateless planter. This planter has meter assemblies that will drive you to drink. To clean out a meter in a field will cause you to invent new swear words.
Look around for a JD 7000 4 or 6 row with "finger type" meters, there should be several available if you take the time to search because farmers have moved on to larger machines.
The 7000 has meter parts that are the same as the ones built today by JD and Kinze, and you can get parts from multiple sources. You can take them apart for cleaning/adjusting/repair very easily.
I"ve repaired about 1600 finger meters thru the years; I have tried to make the 1240 perform properly and economically...no more.
I"ve always said "If you are thinking about buying a 1240, go lie down until the thought goes away".
