john deere 1240 planter

i was looking at a john deere 1240 planter, its dry fertilizer, 4 row, narrow, wondering if it would be a good by at 500 dollars?

In this area (NW Iowa), I suspect it would bring scrap price. However, I owned one for several years back in the 70's, I think. As far as I am concerned, it was one of the best planters of its time. Check the conditions of the fertilizer parts.

The 1240 was Deere"s first attempt at a plateless planter. This planter has meter assemblies that will drive you to drink. To clean out a meter in a field will cause you to invent new swear words.

Look around for a JD 7000 4 or 6 row with "finger type" meters, there should be several available if you take the time to search because farmers have moved on to larger machines.

The 7000 has meter parts that are the same as the ones built today by JD and Kinze, and you can get parts from multiple sources. You can take them apart for cleaning/adjusting/repair very easily.

I"ve repaired about 1600 finger meters thru the years; I have tried to make the 1240 perform properly and economically...no more.

I"ve always said "If you are thinking about buying a 1240, go lie down until the thought goes away".

You should be able to buy a 7000 for that kind of money up to maybe $1000. You will be much better off with the 7000 over the 1240.

$500 sounds plenty steep unless everything is almost like new and the fertilizer attachment is rust-free. I would agree with the other posters - save up a few more coins and get a 7000 series instead - you will be alot happier with it in the long run. Unless you want it for it vintage reasons (a 1972 3020 pulling a 1240 is more "correct" than pulling a 7000; that sort of thing)

I should have mentioned in my first post that I was speaking of the plate type 1240. I have no experience with the plateless.

Weren't those and the 7000 models available in both plate and plateless types ?

I know the 7000 was.

And my cousin has a 1240 and I think he likes it. So it must be a plate type.

Junk, Get a 7000 series, they are antiques in their own.But you can install heavy duty downspring kit, COulters, and have a no til unit!

Gordo

A 1240 if plate type is just about the exact same as a 494A planter and they were a very good planter, that is what I had and you could not give me a 7000 to use
