Scrap prices, during the summer, were very good here near Pittsburgh, Pa., and with the price of gasoline being so high, taking in a load of scrap iron brought $12 to $20 for a short pickup load. Then, after the bottom fell out, i took in much of the same stuff, and got $6 for it. Hardly worth the effort. So now, it'll be held back to watch the prices. Alum. is way down, too. Copper-not bad yet, but get better price for clean stuff. Here's what the price was last week: Alum. cans:.40/lb Aluminum: .35/lb Yellow brass: .60 lb red brass: .70/lb #1 copper:$1.25/lb #2 copper: $1.10 lb. Non-magnetic stainless: $.20/lb. Another ad: Alum. cans: .48/Lb. Aluminum: .30 Lb. #1 copper: $1.25 lb. #2 copper: $1.15 lb. Yellow brass: .50/lb. Red Brass: $.65/lb. Clean tin: $5.00/per 100 Lbs. Cast aluminum: .25 Lb. Earlier in the year, aluminum cans brought .75/ lb.! One place is paying $140 per ton, for brake rotors! And, $2.00 for car batteries. I don't see prices going up any time soon. Of course, the high prices were because of China getting ready for the Olympics, so i was told. So, start a war, and we'll be sittin' in high clover again!

At this age, I believed tractor farming was the only way, hot stuff -- and given a chance I probably would have used the tractor, Dad's first, a 1936 Model "A" John Deere, to go bring in the cows! And I think Dad was ready for some automation too. And so it was that we acquired a good, used J. I. Case, wire tie hay baler. In addition to a person to drive th
