I agree. It does come down to personal responsibility. My oldest son got his first bb gun at five, his first deer rifle at 8 and shot his first deer last year at the age of 9. He said, "mom, I brought meat home for the table". It was a very proud moment for me.
That said, we take personal responsibility and gun safety VERY seriously in our household. He never target shoots with his rifle without my husband (parrothead) present. His friends are not allowed to come over and shoot his gun, etc. All guns remain locked and or stored away, just as you would with any investment property. He is always strictly supervised. Although, in all actuality, he probably doesn't need to be. He is extremely responsible and very safe.
We have two big deer in our freezer. One my husband shot and the one from my son. Boy, a big ol' pot of venison chili sure does sound good right now! MMMMMM......
On another note - don't think that I believe EVERY child is ready to own a bb gun at 5 and a rifle at 8. My middle son will be 8 next month. He won't be getting a rifle yet.... he's not ready. My youngest son turned 5 this summer and he doesn't own a bb gun yet. He's not ready.
The overwhelming majority of hunters and gun collectors are not irresponsible with them. But, criminals are. They are who we must fear. Not the gun owners. And, if they come near me, or my husband, or my children, they better be ready for a fight.
If guns are "dangerous weapons", then so are tractors. I'm sure if you ran over someone with one of your tractors, you'd kill them, right? It's all about the personal responsibility.
And ----- just to show you how open-minded I am -- I will tell you that I don't think you are "girly" or wear women's underwear or "panties" just because you don't own guns.
I understand your perspective, I just don't agree with it.
