If you are going to be hunting small fields and woods I LOVE my mini 14 with a peep sight.
If you are hunting open contry any 223, 22-250 type round up to 243 or even 25-06 is great in a solid bolt action with a 4-12 or so X 40+mm name brand scope will work great. If you can see if you have friends that will let you shoot a few differnt brands and models and see which one feels best to you. I have an old Savage 243 that is ok but the trigger sucks on it, feels like an old pellet gun. The new savages with the accu triger I think it's call are realy sweet guns for the money.
