I have been watching digital signals from our local stations in Northern New York for more than two years already. The picture is much, much better. And all of the stations show at least one extra channel of programming piggybacked on the digital channel. If you are watching analog over-the-air TV from a full-power station, you will not see anything after the shutoff. The reason is that comittments have been made to sell the old frequencies for other uses. That said, you can buy a used Directv HD satellite receiver, such as Sony SAT-HD100, 200, or 300 really cheap and it will pull in the digital signals for you, and you do not need to subscribe to Directv to use it for that purpose. They are on Ebay all the time, for a lot less than the converter boxes. And they pull in HD widescreen, which most of the new boxes don't.
