ot February DTV conversion deadline

This is the biggest rip-off/scare tactic I've seen since the days of Y2K. Do you honestly believe that our televisions will just GO BLACK next February?? Never happenb.

I guaranteed that I'll still be watching TV in March. Just like I still had my computer and stuff after Y2K. It was all jhust a scam to make money.

The people that make this stuff up are the same one thst try to sell the global warming hype.

Your analog channels will be gone. If you don't have a digital tuner for your off air antenna, you will not see anything except a few low power stations scattered throughout the country. If you have cable or satellite tv, nothing changes for you.

Since this was dreamed up and put into effect thru an executive order when clinton was president, one has to wonder how much the dope-smoking draft dodger made off the television manufacturers.

The local TV stations are aleady capable of transmitting DTV, and have done several DTV only signal tests during their news brodcasts. During the tests, your screen will either go black or you will get a message that tells you you are digital ready. It is for real. FCC is planning on selling off the old frequencies. DOUG

I have been watching digital signals from our local stations in Northern New York for more than two years already. The picture is much, much better. And all of the stations show at least one extra channel of programming piggybacked on the digital channel.
If you are watching analog over-the-air TV from a full-power station, you will not see anything after the shutoff.
The reason is that comittments have been made to sell the old frequencies for other uses.
That said, you can buy a used Directv HD satellite receiver, such as Sony SAT-HD100, 200, or 300 really cheap and it will pull in the digital signals for you, and you do not need to subscribe to Directv to use it for that purpose. They are on Ebay all the time, for a lot less than the converter boxes. And they pull in HD widescreen, which most of the new boxes don't.

Yes, the digital signals will be the only ones received by a TV antenna in about 100 days from now. And yes, it is ripoff. I use antenna for stations that cable and satellite do not carry. Have finest antenna and amplifier that I could buy. Fine with analog signal. But the programs break up with digital if it is raining or if big truck passes by. My reception is screwed. Digital sets must have perfect signal. If even one bit of signal is lost, the picture just freezes up. Like a deer in the headlights, the tuner has no idea what to do if any part of the digital signal is lost for the shortest period of time.

I'm 80-90 miles from the stations. I get good digital in high pressures, at night, etc. I get nothing at all in rain, snow, fog. I get a little now & then in between.

Saw today one station in the 'Cities is going to decrease it's analog power on December 5th, so that one will go away early. It happens to be the best digital signal I get, but as I say, in any less than nice weather, or the afternoon sun angle, all the digitals go away.

It'll happen, because other folks will pay to get the frequencies made avaialable....

One thing most people forget is that most stations are running their digital signal at much lower power than they will at the changeover, plus if their main transmitter currently runs on a VHF channel (2 thru 13) they will gain a big boost in range when they switch back to VHF from their temporary UHF channel.
If you get a signal now, it will get better after the switch.

The info-mercials will be crystal clear...Yippie!

Will there be a dish system that will do tv and broadband internet?

Unless ya get the box for your old analog set you aint going to see nuttin as they will be broadcasting UHF. Just get the box.

Hmm. I guess you must like that 1930's technology. I'm afraid that the FCC is as likely to back off on the digital TV switch as Ford is to come out with a new flathead V8-powered roadster with a rumble seat.

Sometimes things gotta change.

Isnt it amazing that the gov has to tell us that we need high end TV's...Maybe we dont need high end tv and we should focus on more important things...Like paying our mortgage every month since a bunch of us are seemingly forgetting how to do that....

does anyone know if it is possible to need some sort of digital converter for cable? I have cable service thru Charter here in West Michigan and they are telling me I have to buy a converter box from them to be able to continue seeing TV after Feb. I think they are completely ripping me off but they say I have analaog cable. Every website I have looked at says if you have cable you are all set but Charter is pulling something.

Yepper, the guys below are right... the frequencies now used to broadcast TV signals are worth a lot more $$$ and are essentially being sold to the highest bidder. We currently have a roof top antenna and watch (very little) tv with the "1930's technology"... and don't intend to get a converter box. The FCC just made this easy for us... no more TV!!! (and this is bad ...how???) ...D

I can refer you to a website to read about this. They are trying to rip you off. Go to ClarkHoward.com and type in cable dtv ripoff. Should come up with several articles, with the last one being Nov 7, 2008. DOUG

What's your address, I'll send you a deck of playing cards to provide you with some entertainment.

I'm not far from Wichita and the PBS stations are pulling the plug in January on analog broadcasts.

As a test city Wilmington, N.C. stations shut of analog broadcasts September 8th. Article below.

With some of the frequencies already having been auctioned off for big bucks I don't think there will be any going back to analog once it is switched off.

Best wishes. Now about that address----
Wilmington, N.C. digital TV test city.

You are either kidding or have been hiding under a rock for years.
Actually the screen image will turn into snow rather than black.

I am southeast of Wichita and I have had trouble getting PBS here lately. I hope when they make the switch to digital that things will improve. I saw on their website that they have applied to be able to broadcast a stronger signal. Hope it works out. I already have a large/long range antenna on a rotator. Most of the time the digital works good. Sunday however I noticed one channel had no sound on digital. Switched back to analog and it was fine. All the other channels had sound on the digital.

There are connectors on the box for Satellite, Cable, and Antenna. All you need to use is the antenna connection. The box will want to set up the dish, but you can skip that. Then you 'scan for channels' and it will find all the digital signals that you can receive.
Sony is not the only make that works, but whatever you are thinking about, just check the manuals that are available on-line in most cases, or ask the seller if it will work.
Possible option

Hi neighbor, I'm up the road from you in Hutch.

I don't doubt you are having trouble with PBS as their tower is just straight east of Hutchinson. KWCH tower is near Hutch as well.

From the KPTS Web site: "Our digital transition channel (29) is broadcasting from a lower antenna on our tower which will not provide as strong a signal for reception. As this transition ends, KPTS is returning to our VHF channel 8 to make it digital next year. This move will make reception easier for many. In addition, we have requested permission to increase our transmitted power to further improve reception. The date of that approval or disapproval is yet unknown."

Can you get any of the low power analog channels out of Wichita? Since the low power stations need not switch to digital you may still get them with a pass through converter or without one.

Wikipedia has information on many of the stations. It shows the power of the present digital signal. One of my favorite stations assured me that the digital signal now is at full strength. I'm screwed.
