Had a neighbor who did that- got laid off from his job driving truck for a wholesale grocery outfit when the company building burned and they ceased operations. Continued on unemployment for 2 years while he got an Associates degree in environmental science. Then found he didn't have a snowball's chance of getting a job in the field, because he was competing with guys with bachelors, masters and even doctorate degrees. So went back to driving truck. Had a nice time going to college, though. Recommend that you retrain in some field where the associate's degree is as high as you can go- civil engineering technician, diesel technician, etc.- instead of an academic field where others have higher degrees.
