Do you have a paved driveway, or gravel? IF it's paved and you go right down to clear pavement, it shouldn't be too bad without chains. I however would want them.
On gravel where most guys pack down the first couple inches of snow to prevent scrapping up too much gravel while plowing, you're gonna need chains. On ice, there's little to no traction without chains on the tires.
From what it sounds like, you're on pavement and it'll be getting cleared right down to nothing. For that, you should be ok pushing a small blade without chains. Don't count on it if you get an ice storm though.
