If you have the correct pressure for the cylinder size and your seals are good, it doesn't make any difference what fluid you use, air, oil, water, nitrogen, etc you should be able to lift a load. Most hydraulic pumps operate at 1000-2500 pi. If your air compressor is rated at 150 psi and you have a 2 inch cylinder, your cylinder, at most, can push 471 lbs. If you get a bigger cylinder, you can lift more with a 150 psig. If you can get a higher pressure, you can lift more with the same cylinder.
