Been working on a dump trailer... as I been building it I got it so I can hook air to the Hoist.. it's a wagon hoist .. anyway things been going good .. check the hoist w/air and everthing works good...
Now I have the floor and sides on .. the AIR wouldn't Lift it...
Question : Will oil RAISE it ?? .. Does oil push more than air ? my compressor put out 150 lbs.
The reason I haven't use oil is I need a few fittings... I have a self contain oil and pump 12v...system ..
APPRICATE any and ALL replys....

THANKS .... Mark

Air will compress and oil won't ,air will be jerky. plus the more pressure you apply the more you get multiplied by the dia. of the cyl. So you put 2000 psi of hyd. pressure on there and things are going to move or bend !

Hydraulics put out a lot more pressure than 150psi. Like the other poster said hydraulics would probably be more like 2000psi.

THANK YOU..... I was a hopping I didn't do all this for nothing ..... It work GREAT ... but I use floor plating on floor ... wanted something to take the abuse .. plus thats what I had .. laying around..
AGAIN..... MANY THANKS .... Mark

Air powered systems are weak at that pressure, and will be able to violently explode at higher pressures. Go hydraulic. JimN

Got an old '67 Dodge bob-truck ( my Dad bought new) which we put a hoist under about 35 years ago (350 bu. bed); never got around to getting a pump, so we've used it all those years with a hydraulic hose plugged into a tractor's hydraulics. No telling at the bushels of beans the thing has put into the grain bins; always had a tractor setting there running the auger........

If you have the correct pressure for the cylinder size and your seals are good, it doesn't make any difference what fluid you use, air, oil, water, nitrogen, etc you should be able to lift a load. Most hydraulic pumps operate at 1000-2500 pi. If your air compressor is rated at 150 psi and you have a 2 inch cylinder, your cylinder, at most, can push 471 lbs. If you get a bigger cylinder, you can lift more with a 150 psig. If you can get a higher pressure, you can lift more with the same cylinder.

It does matter that you do not use air, or any other "gas". Compressed gasses are like springs. The stability of the dumping process would be poor. As the load is lifted, the geometry changes and the load is reduced on the cylinder. this allows the cylinder to extend farther/faster. The dumping will proceed with ever greater speed eventually catipulting the last of the load. Even if just trying to drive forward will wiggle the load up and down making a even spread impossible. Not good JimN

Use that 12 volt self-contained unit. You will need braided hydraulic hose too. We used one of those 12 volt unit's to raise and lower our load cell on a heavy field dynamometer. You may need a new hydraulic cylinder too, depending on how much you're lifting when loaded. Hal

It's not about the pressure, Hyds. are stable and air is not! I have run air systems for a tow company and can lift a loaded trailer truck with 4 lbs. pressure "Max" but you need a hyd. system. As to what oil? A lot depends on where you are - the colder it is = the lighter the oil In most cases I would use any universal hyd. oil.

THANK YOU ALL for your replys .. I learn again ... the pump does say to use ATF ... so thats what I will use..

AGAIN THANKS guys ... Mark
