Rear Tire Tread Direction - does it really matter???

I've often wondered, does it really make a big difference which way the 'V' in the overlapping bars of a tread on a rear tire face? Seems to me when we were kids pulling a toboggan up a snowy hill, we would splay our toes 'outwards' to get more traction, not toes 'inwards'. I haven't had any real first hand experience so I'd appreciate an explanation. Maybe some physics teacher can get technical on us. Also, occasionally you see a rear tire with the regular overlapping 'V' design but the ribs actually connect near the middle of the tire tread. Don't seem to see them very much anymore. Were there any advantages or disadvantages to this type of tread?
