I look at raising chickens kind of like gardening. You can buy the eggs or produce cheaper at the store, but quality? All the old produce gets thrown to the chickens, compost comes out to the garden. If you like them, it is worth it. If you don't, it isn't. Kind of like asking how much your health is worth. Had a run in with a bear this year, lost a lot of chickens and had to rebuild the coop. If it had continued, I might have given it up. I like the chickens though, so it's worth it to me.
