It isn't worth it. Without going into a long story, my wife got stuck with a couple dozen baby chicks several years ago. I built an 8 foot square by four foot high coop on large castors out of 2X2's, sheeting, and chicken wire. We kept them in one stall of the garage until they were big enough to butcher and put in the freezer.
The upshot of it was, I figured up the costs involved, building the coop, feed, time spent butchering them, cleaning up the mess in the garage, etc, and it came out to something like $20 per pound by the time they were in the frying pan.
Plus along the way we had to worry about varmints, including snakes, being attracted to the garage.
Would we do it again? That's one thing my wife and I ageed on. Not only no, but hell no. I tore the coop down, and used the material for other projects. The castor wheels are now under a dolly for holding pickup boxes in my shop.
