Also, it could be your PC checking in with the printer/scanner/etc if you have a network printer or another PC on your network. Especially if you have any other protocols other than TCP/IP installed.
Or it could be a pure virus/malware reporting your information back to someone on the web or your PC could have been hacked. This is less likely, but it definitely does happen.
You can open a DOS command box and type in "netstat -a" to see a complete listing of all connections at that instant. It's a little crude looking, but it will show you everything that is going on, in all but the most severe and sophisticated compromises...
