I dunno... I'd probably leave it alone if it works. So easy to drop a pin in the hole and go. Since you have the pintle, and reciever and are somewhat concerned about the legality of the hitch pin, slap the pintle on it. That siad, if I was going out to buy a whole new setup, it would probably be a ball. The worst part about the pintle is the way they slap around on the ring. A ball is nice and tight. Pintle's can get walking the trailer left to right on the ring sometimes. Probably not something you'd want on a pickup. Not such a big factor on a tandem where I use the pintle, but perhaps a bit wild on a pickup if it doesn't put down good tounge weight.
