Pintal hitch

I have a chipper I need to replace the hitch. What it has now is a 3/4 inch hole for a bolt and nut, which may not be legal. I have a pintal hitch I can mount without much trouble. I also have a pintal receiver to fit my truck, or spend money for a ball hitch. What is the pintal hitch really used for. The v8 engine is right at the front, so there is a lot of weight right up front. Any info appreciated. stan

V-8 engine on a chipper, sounds like good sized drum machine, some of those have substantial tongue weight, some are heavyweight elephants

if you are only moving it around your property at low speed ball should work

if you are out on the road, strongly recommend sturdy pintle, check out some tree service rigs to help you decide

pintle was easier to hook up for me

I dunno...
I'd probably leave it alone if it works. So easy to drop a pin in the hole and go.
Since you have the pintle, and reciever and are somewhat concerned about the legality of the hitch pin, slap the pintle on it. That siad, if I was going out to buy a whole new setup, it would probably be a ball.
The worst part about the pintle is the way they slap around on the ring. A ball is nice and tight.
Pintle's can get walking the trailer left to right on the ring sometimes. Probably not something you'd want on a pickup. Not such a big factor on a tandem where I use the pintle, but perhaps a bit wild on a pickup if it doesn't put down good tounge weight.
