Jeff, youre kinda mixin the terms Generator and Alternator, which do you have. On Generators I usually run 12 gauge from the BAT ternminal on the VR up to the amp gauge and from ARM/GEN on the VR to the gennys ARM post. On alternators I run 10 gauge from the Alternators output stud up to the ammeter.
I am attaching a URL Link to my non charging troubleshooting procedure, pay attention for what system you have, be it a Low/High charge light switch and 2 wire Cutout Relay or a full fledged Voltage Regulator and Para 5 tells easily how to see if non charging is more of a Genny versus a VR problem.
