My experience is very much like Wardner's. You can cut a lot of grass, fast and with less horsepower than a rotary mower. But debris (especially sticks under trees) will jam a reel. And once the grass gets too long you need a rotary to hack it down. Reels are best out in wide open spaces (like fairways), they are difficult to use around trees, shrubs, buildings, etc. You can't get into corners and you can't back up.
