old steel,new steel ,it is still steel. I would use it on thin covers like oilpan and valve covers and such.seals way better than cork. i would straighten the mating surfaces as these parts are often deformed by tightening bolts with cork as gasket.I always use the black RTV .and use brake cleaner to get the mating surfaces oil free and dry before use.
