Having spent a good part of my callow youth rounding up sleeping cows from pastures at 4 AM (Dad had to milk early, so he could get to his day job- don't know how he did it), I sure never noticed any pattern to the way they layed around sleeping. I can vouch for their internal clocks- they were usually arousing themselves and stretching when I arrived on the scene, and we sure hated the onset of daylight saving time in the spring- you'd no sooner get a cow up, go for another, and the first was laying back down again.
