The local news this morning was going on about this study that shows that cattle tend to face North-South most of the time. As someone with cattle, I think this is a little suspect. If it's just a subtle difference, then maybe it's believable, but the news was saying something like 2/3 of the time!

The study was based completely on satellite images. I wonder if anyone bothered to tell the researchers that those pictures are only taken when the sun is highest in the sky on completely clear days. They might find out that humans tend to face north most of the time in those conditions as well.
Cow Study

Having spent a good part of my callow youth rounding up sleeping cows from pastures at 4 AM (Dad had to milk early, so he could get to his day job- don't know how he did it), I sure never noticed any pattern to the way they layed around sleeping. I can vouch for their internal clocks- they were usually arousing themselves and stretching when I arrived on the scene, and we sure hated the onset of daylight saving time in the spring- you'd no sooner get a cow up, go for another, and the first was laying back down again.

My wife was watching one of those cooking shows one time that got my dander up too. Some chef was claiming that one side of the brisket was more tender than the other because cows always lay on one particular side. I don't even remember which. It's kind of like cow tipping. I've still got a standing offer of $1000 to anybody that can come up with a video of it. It's all a load of city slicker crap.
