Yes, and if you are still 24 volt with one batteries positive and one batteries neg. connected to the frame, you will need TWO alternators. One charging 12 positive and one charging 12 negative. It would be best to convert to a later 12 volt starter and use a 3 wire alternator because the one wires do not work well in slow speed equipment.
